TWO CLASSIC RAILROAD VIDEOS ON ONE DISC!

“The Nickel Plate Story”
This film showcases the Nickel Plate Road’s “High Speed Service” from Buffalo to Chicago and from Cleveland to St. Louis. On the point of these hotshot freights are the road’s famous 2-8-4 Berkshires. Although freight service is the heart of this program, there are also scenes of Alco PAs in passenger service and some scenes inside the road’s luxurious dining cars. You'll see the line’s rotary car dumpers at Huron on Lake Erie and the huge yards at Frankfort, Indiana and Bellevue, Ohio.

This was a time when the railroads handled most of the nation’s freight. Through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York the Nickel Plate moved food, raw materials and finished products. You will see what it was like to be a part of this great railroad in its heyday.

“Once Upon the Wabash”
In this professionally produced program the emphasis is on passenger service, with streamliners and E units. The story begins with a couple of newlyweds wishing they could ride on the Wabash’s new “Blue Bird” streamliner. By magic, they get a tour of the new train, from the observation to the diner, from the domes to the new roller bearing trucks. In addition to the passenger diesels, F units get to strut their stuff with freights.

In contrast to the “Nickel Plate Story” here the emphasis is on the efficiency and speed of the road’s new diesels. Of special note are the Great Lakes car ferries and some great scenes of a classification yard and the building of freight cars. Also included are scenes of the road’s major terminals in Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Detroit, Toledo and Omaha.
